The Newstead Abbey muster took place over the Queen's Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend, June 2nd/4th, 2012. The weather was unfortunately wet and cold, especially the Sunday, which saw non-stop rain.
Highlights of the weekend for me were Laurie Ingram carrying Prince Maurice's personal colours on the field on Saturday, and Ben French taking to the field as a Dragoone for the first time. Aside from the obvious importance of two new additions to our field strength, it has been a long time since any of the regiment's Colours appeared on the field, so it was gratifying to see - even if most of the people around us had no idea whose colour it was!
The numbers we fielded were also good - 11 dragoones and an Officer on Saturday and Monday, with 12 Dragoones and an Officer on Sunday. Maurice's made up over half of the shot for Sir Jacob Astley's division on each day.
Although the Saturday was cold and damp, the rain held off until the late evening, so we gathered around the Orange's fire tray for a barbecue and then a camp fire. After a brief assault by a rampaging hen party (which we beat off with a glass of wine and a doughnut), we settled in for chatting, drinking and singing until our stint at guard duty from 11-midnight
Here are some pictures from the event: thanks to Martin Taylor for his group shots. Shame we didn't actually manage to get everyone into one shot!
We also have some pictures of Maurice's on the field, courtesy of John Orange junior, who arrived on-site towards the end of Saturday's battle.
