Many years ago, Maurice's had a reputation as a Regiment that liked to sing, and did it rather well.

Some of the songs sung in those days have fallen out of fashion - some deservedly so - but one or two I believe are worth reviving.

Cliff Skey, both a member of Maurice's and very active on the Plymouth Folk Club scene in the early 80's, is believed to have written this song, based on the Copper Family song Bright Phoebe. I have made a slight change to verse 3, to improve the sense.

The King is a-wintering
In old Oxford town,
Where he makes a new plan
To bring Parliament down

Parliament down,
Parliament down,
Parliament down,
Where he makes a new plan
To bring Parliament down

Prince Maurice is our General,
Of Pride and Valour,
As successful as those
That have thousands or more

Thousands or more,
Thousands or more,
Thousands or more
As successful as those
That have thousands or more

Prince Maurice, Sir Beville,
Bold Slanning this day,
They will hasten the rout
And drive Roundheads away

Roundheads away,
Roundheads away,
Roundheads away
Is to hasten the rout
And drive Roundheads away

He's fed us, he's clothed us,
His praises we'll sing,
Raise your glasses on high,
Here's a health to the King

Health to the King,
Health to the King,
Health to the King
Raise your glasses on high,
Here's a health to the King
